Day in the Life

Colleges often do a day in the life. I thought I would do one: This is an authentic "this is what happened on 9/15/2008", unlike many days in the life which are fabricated from typical things people do. In addition, I did not know that I was going to to a day in the life for today when the day started. It represents an a-typical day, I'll be honest; most days include just a little less what happened to me on this Mon.

  • 6:32AM Wake up late to school; (instead of 6:10) must compress morning routine
  • 6:40AM Go out to the bus; read MySQL book on the way to school
  • 7:00AM Wait for Dr. Reilly outside 3rd floor teacher's lounge, read CIO Magazine; plan when I am going to do my annual photoshoot of all of the senior homerooms for H-Vision
  • 7:20 AM: Meet with Dr Reilly to go over college recommendation letter by providing him with a copy of my most recent Personal Update.
  • 7:30 AM: Entrepreneurship class: talk about Lehman Brothers bankruptcy; activities to learn people's names; watch presentations; talk to teacher about my GridView business
  • 8:10AM Mrs. Fish tracks me down in class to tell me I forgot my jacket with her on Friday; I missed my MP3 player for listening to podcasts like Security Now and Windows Weekly
  • 9AM: Homeroom: tell homeroom teacher I am going to H-Vision (student television) meeting. Greet new members and set up dates for anchor and technical practice on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively
  • 9:16AM: Humanities class with Mr. Mullen in a different room due to painting; write and edit college essay, as well as assist other student's with their's; help calm student who realized she forgot to answer the prompt in her letter
  • 10:25PM: Quick hello to my girlfriend who asks me if I want to see Joe Biden at Linvilla Orchards tomorrow night. Oh yes!
  • 10:30AM: Meeting with the principal to present Videre, my Gov School project to improve online gradebooks, as well as update him on my work with SeniorQuoter and SocialView
  • 11:20AM: Make it back to class in time to see 10 minutes of the movie showing in Business Law, Fracture.
  • 11:30AM: Lunch; stop by guidance counselor to check if she was able to convince the department to accept the forms electronically; eat 5 min of my lunch to find that Mrs. Fish, the school's publications director is trying to frantically find me
  • 11:40AM: The tech department is rewiring the room to not use a hub or router. Mrs. Fish is very concerned that stuff will break. The rewiring messes up file sharing and network printing, so I revert the network 5 min after the man leaves and console Mrs. Fish that everything will work. I stay into the rest of 3rd block putting away extra wires she has laying around and putting away old equipment.
  • 12:56PM: Go to 4th block, Calculus. Go over the test I got a 92% on; argue about getting a point back I think I deserve; Talk about Continuity (click to see notes); eat some of my lunch I could not eat earlier
  • 2:22PM: Head over to the schools admin offices for my scheduled meeting with the directory of technology: show off Videre again, give an update on SeniorQuoter and Tecker 911 being back; give my thoughts on how to improve Classrooms of the Future by bosting the log in time (the admins don't ever really use the tech so they don't know what drives kids crazy; agree that the domain log in seems longer; propose system that only requires log in for accessing your files;
  • ~3:45PM Mr. McGriff (9th Grade Principal) walks in with Dallas Cowboys hat on (with an Eagles game tonight) rallying up outrage from his support of the Cowboys, asks if I know of anything for building a family tree or way to connect his family, suggest Ning and he asks if collecting student's cell numbers for sending text messages was a good idea, I tell him only if the purpose for collecting them was clear (the school was not doing it for trying to catch people using phones in school)
  • ~4:44 Look at pics on the wall from Tech Time, the computer club in middle school; talk to the network guy about the slow booting laptops; talk about how I see tech helping education best (I am not really sure); complain about how our school won't submit the counselor forms electronically: it seems like so much less work; talk about how the IRS should charge for paper filing and make E-filing free; Senior Project ideas
  • ~4:30PM: Talk about what will happen with the publications office; admins not happy it was flying under the radar; advocate from Mrs. Fish saying she needs this stuff to work; admins say this was the first time they knew she needed file sharing and that sharing should work over the school's network, but firewall is blocking file sharing; will try to fix tomorrow; arrange meeting tomorrow at lunch to work and try to address admins and pub office demands.
  • 5:40PM: Leave and call my mom and dad tying to see if I can get a ride home; no luck; start to walk
  • 5:45PM: My GridView employee calls me about questions with some work I set him; I give him an overview of what to do as I dodge traffic walking home
  • 6:00PM Neighbor I helped with their computers sees me walking home and offers to give me a ride
  • 6:05PM Come across a big bunch of College Mail
  • 6:05PM Write this day in the life while it is still fresh
  • 6:45PM Write girlfriend about tomorrow, and Mrs. Fish telling her not to worry that I told the admins about Pub office and they will fix it tomorrow and not to worry.
  • 6:55PM Try to call people I am helping with the computer; Dad is on the phone (even though he has his own line!)
  • 7:00PM Watch Obama Rally live online at "Change We Need" Rally in Pueblo, CO
  • 7:30PM Check SeniorQuoter 2.0beta 2 for SQL injection attacks with SQL Inject Me firefox app. It pases all of the tests
  • 7:45PM Read the OLPC (aka the $100 laptop) email updates since I own one and I am interested in what changes it will bring to education
  • 8:00PM Dinner with Reece's Peanut Butter Ice Cream Bar. Yum!
  • 8:45PM Read MSNBC article on finance crisis
  • 8:50PM Start Tecker 911 Episode 52-60 upload of HD versions to Amazon S3 for BitTorrent distribution via an RSS feed
  • 9:00 Calculus Homework on my tablet pc
  • 9:05PM Avoid argument over new Facebook with a friend; this is the same stupid argument as Mac vs PC and XP vs Vista
  • 9:30PM Finish Calculus homework, check Eagles NFL scores; See link to Sirius and look up Sirius on Wikipedia for details on their merger with XM - seperate services for 15 years!!!
  • 9:35PM Mail letter to the elderly people I help with the computer. Ah a paper letter!
  • 9:40PM Read Digg: Ignore stupid Vista bashing story, read about the "new" VIM editor, latest Apple MacBook rumor, seamless sync (I love ArsTechnia!)
